This reversible, upcycled silk sari scarf is hand-made by a woman-owned-and-operated social enterprise in New Delhi, India.

It is made using 2 layers of vintage sari fabric, hand-picked and paired piece-by-piece by color and design.  The layers are then stitched together using the "kantha" stitch, in which women from a low-income co-operative in West Bengal sew rows of tiny running stitches from end-to-end. This detailed and labor-intensive work re-inforces the layered fabric, and  creates a rich, rippling effect across the fabric that adds a unique texture the scarf.

This scarf is a limited edition piece, and one-of-a-kind. You will never see the same combination of fabrics and threads twice. This kantha embroidery is of the highest quality, stitched by women whose families have been sewing kantha for generations in West Bengal, India. The scarf undergoes at least seven steps of quality control.

Each kantha artisan embroiders her name in Bengali in a corner of the scarf, just as an artist will sign their work. We hope that this will remind you of the long journey the scarf has taken to reach you and the positive impact your purchase is making on the artisan and her family!
