Bandhani is an ancient Indian fabric art of resist dyeing. The word bandhani comes from the Sanskrit word, bandha, meaning "to tie" and dates back to the Indus Valley Civilization more than 3000 years ago.

This technique involves pinching the fabric and then wrapping the pinched bit of fabric with thread in a predetermind pattern and then dyeing the fabric. Areas under the thread resist the dye, and upon opening, reveal a design of dots in the pattern in which the fabirc was tyed. If the fabric is thin enough, two layers of fabric can be pinched together. It is an exhaustingly time-consuming process, with each pinch and wrap made individually.

Bandhani is today only practiced in the areas where it was developed - Sindh (Pakistan), Punjab, Gujarat and Rajasthan (India).

This scarf was created by craftwomen in a Bhuj-based group of roughly 200 women who are exceptionally skilled at this ancient art.

This technique of bandhani (India's answer to tie-dye) is very similar to Kanoko shibori, a Japanese tie-dye in which very tiny bits of cloth are bound with thread to create "dots" in a specific pattern. Japanese kimono cloth is dyed this way.
