This is a handspun and handwoven cotton scarf. The body is inlaid with recatangular and floral motifs inserted randomly into the khadi weave and metallic gold stripes are inlaid in the border.  It is finished with hand-twisted tassels. This piece is naturally dyed in indigo and was designed by Karomi, a Kolkata-based textile design outfit owned by two sisters.  This scarf was woven by jamdani weavers in rural West Bengal.

Jamdani is an age-old and laborious weaving technique that dates back to the Mughal era.  In this technique,  extra-weft supplementary motifs are inlaid  by hand into the fabric while the threads are still on the loom. Jamdani is a Persian word dating back to Mughal times - Jam (flower) and Dani (vase).
